Building the Berlin Wall:
After the Potsdam Conference, Germany was divided into four zones, the United States, Britain, France, and the Soviet Union. The same was done for the capitol, Berlin. Having these zones to each country began to become an aggressive attempt to extend their land. For instance, the United States, Britain, and France joined forces and created their side, the democracy side, and the Soviet Union side, the communistic side. The democratic side was called the Federal Republic of Germany and the communist side was referred to as the German Democratic Republic. Conditions in East Berlin were terrible. The economy was awful and people's individual freedom was severely restricted. Because of this, people began to emigrate to West Berlin, due to the better conditions. Most people made it across, but some couldn't. To eliminate this from happening, the Soviet Union built the Berlin Wall, completely blocking of East Berlin from West Berlin. This angered the United States very much, and had no choice, but to take action.
